Tooth loss results in bone loss. Bone loss is reduced with dental implants. This solution for tooth loss is being increasingly adopted by many people, owing to the improvement in the quality of life for the patient, and improved aesthetic look. People are now looking for substitutes for crowns, bridges and denture treatments. They are getting convinced about the significance of the aesthetic looks that dental implants gives. Another reason for its growing popularity is that it is promoted through various marketing strategies by implant manufacturers.
Technology has played a major role in all aspects of our lives. And dentistry is not an exception. Technology has transformed the treatment methods and brought convenience and ease to them. A couple of years ago, having a root canal treatment meant many visits to the dental clinic and going through a painful process. It would lead to people shunning away from having a root canal.
But, digitization is fast picking up in dentistry. It has been incorporated at all stages of treatment from scanning to prosthesis. Ceramic materials that are used for implants have been improved upon. CAD/CAM technologies have facilitated different treatments. These technologies have helped in a variety of dental restoration procedures like dental implants, crowns, fixed bridges, etc.
Osseointegration is used in dental implants now, where the bone biologically bonds with the titanium or implant. Nanotechnology has also been incorporated in dentistry, which has lead to further advancements in dental treatments.
With this background, let us look at the Indian scenario. Netscribes has launched a report on Dental Implants Market in India 2012. The report studies the drivers of the implant treatment. Life expectancy has increased, thus giving a scope for dental implants. Medical tourism has also caught up in India due to cost effectiveness in the treatment, as compared to its Western counterparts. People have also become aware of the aesthetic aspects of dental treatments.
Thus, in India or worldwide, dental implants have caught up due the technological advancements. India is not lagging behind in technology. In fact, it has an edge over other countries, considering the cost effective dental treatment, with technology at par with Western countries. Thus, technology has made treatments like dental implants and root canals much more comfortable experiences.

Make Your Smile Sparkle

Cosmetic dentistry is making a huge impact on the lives of many people around the world. And many can benefit from a few simple procedures offered by cosmetic dentists.
Cosmetic dentistry is an important factor for more people becoming interested in dental care. People are recognizing the importance of a good smile. Procedures such as teeth whitening, dental implants, smile makeovers, and even teeth jewellery have become popular among patients.
But this wasn't always the case. Earlier, dentistry was regarded as a general field of medicine. It was only in the 1940s that American studios began to hire dentists to help their debutant get the perfect smile. This was when cosmetic dentistry slowly began to emerge.

Over the years, with the rise of fashion, glamor, music, and films, the demand for that perfect smile also began to grow. Today, cosmetic dentistry has not only been accepted by the public, but the procedures within the field are also used by many to stand out from the crowd.
Teeth whitening are one of the popular procedures that patients undergo. People are realizing that a beautiful smile can not only improve their appearance, but it can also be an important factor for increased self-esteem and confidence.
Another procedure that is growing by the numbers is teeth jewellery. The inexpensive procedure, where a 'tooth jewel' is bonded on the tooth with enamel, has become a huge trend amongst youngsters and the elite. Crystal glass stones are used, which are available in a variety of colors.
Now, the trend of teeth jewellery is being taken one step further. Cosmetic dentists are providing jeweled dental implants, where the entire implant is made from a precious stone.
One celebrity who has been smitten by the dental bling is Lady Gaga. The attention grabbing singer has decided to go in for diamond implants for her teeth. The singer has specially ordered marquise diamonds for the procedure.
Also, she is not the first one to go in for jeweled implants. Rapper Lil Wayne has diamond encrusted teeth. Simply Red singer Mick Hucknall first had a ruby tooth implant, which was later changed to a diamond.
While many dentists may be in favor of providing such services, they do not leave out the importance of dental hygiene. Dentists provide information on the products that would be ideal for someone who has gone in for a cosmetic dental procedure.
After all, it is not the procedure, but the beautiful smile that counts.

Myths about Implant Dentistry

Implant dentistry has been around for more than 40 years now. In this time span, all its negative impacts have been thoroughly analyzed and corrected. Hence, dentists today can guarantee its results. But there are still certain myths prevailing. Let’s find out the most common myths about dental implants.
Myth#1: Dental Implant Surgery is a Painful Procedure
A patient is given local anaesthesia before the implant is fitted into the bone tissue. One injection makes the patient’s mouth area totally numb and he would feel nothing. Once the surgery is complete, there can be a slight discomfort while eating. But if proper care is taken, and all the dentist’s instructions are followed, the effect can be minimized.
Myth#2:  It’s a long procedure
Time taken for the surgery is not more than 20-30 minutes. But one has to wait for certain period of time, to let the body accept the implant. While the implant is fusing with the bone, a temporary crown can be fitted. Once the implant has fused completely, a permanent crown would be fitted that will last you a lifetime. Hence, bearing with a little bit of discomfort for worthwhile results shouldn’t be a problem.

Yes, dental implants are not really cheap. However, it fully restores the function of a healthy tooth. Hence, paying a little extra should not be a cause of concern. They provide you with comfort for the longest period of time, which is not true in case of conventional dentures or fixed bridges. Additionally, with these dentures or bridges you would have to keep visiting your dentist again and again for corrections. Dental implants, on the other hand, are known for causing no inconveniences after the procedure.
Myth#4: Rejection rate is high
Rejection can happen only in 2% of cases, on account of -
 1. An allergy that some patients have with metal objects.
 2. An improper surgery.
Apart from these factors, chances of rejection of dental implants are rare.
Myth#5: Side effects are many
Side effects are involved in any procedure. While treating tooth decay or gum diseases too, we can face some complications. Swelling, bruising, pain, infection, nerve damage, jaw fractures, are common side effects that could occur with an implant surgery. However, they are very rare. When a dentist performs the surgery with all the necessary precautions, and the patient follows all the guidelines, there won’t be any problem post surgery.
These were some of the common myths about dental implants. There are many more. Visit your dentist today, and let him solve all your dental implant queries.

Dental Care – A Health Investment

The eleventh Five-Year Plan, from 2007 to 2012, had a proposed budget of 182.09cr for the National Oral Health Care Programme. This programme started as a pilot project in 1999. The focus of this programme has always been generating oral health care awareness.
The strategy has been to generate awareness by educating schoolchildren and the public through information, education and communication tools. India has tackled problems such as oral cancer, oral health of children through awareness programmes.
The per capita consumption of oral products is low in India. Thus, the potential for the oral care market in India is high. The rising incomes and the growing awareness about oral care have augmented the oral products market in India. The Indian per capita income has increased from Rs 18, 885 in 2002-04 to Rs 54,527 in 2011. Thus, the purchasing power of Indians has increased. According to the 2011 figures, 55% of population in India use toothpaste and 15% brush their teeth twice a day. This indicates the Indian oral care market is untapped. The usage of oral care products in rural areas is one third of than urban areas. Some aesthetic aspects of oral care like teeth whitening are yet unexplored in rural India.
We can conclude from the above figures that there is tremendous potential in the oral care market. According to the 2011 figures; out of the Rs 4,200cr market, toothpaste contributes to the 75% of the market. Rural India is less aware of the oral hygiene. They use twigs, ash, neem and herbal products to take care of their teeth.
Dental Care
Along with dental diseases, Indians are getting aware of the cosmetic aspects of dental care like teeth whitening, teeth alignment, bonding, etc. People also opt for lightening the colour of their teeth. However, why would one go in for such a treatment? In the course of time, the teeth colour changes due to accumulation of tartar, or stains of tea and coffee, or smoking. In such cases, you would want to get rid of the stains on your teeth. Thus, people opt for teeth whitening.
A more serious aspect of dental care is gum disease, which according to doctors is a silent killer. The main reason for gum disease is the hormonal imbalance in the body. This is particularly seen in people who are suffering from diabetes and thyroid disease.
The only way to prevent such serious dental diseases is by spreading awareness, which is an imperative for the dental care market.
